With an exciting cultural evening in honour of Lucio Dalla at the Council Chamber of Town Hall, Pompeii has inaugurated the rich Christmas events calendar 2015/2016. The event, sponsored by the City Council, was introduced and moderated by a very significant and timely speech of Councillor for General Affairs, lawyer Margherita Beatrice, who in presenting the biographical novel by Raffaele Lauro, “Caruso The Song - Lucio Dalla and Sorrento”, reconstructed the historical relationship of the great singer from Bologna with Pompeii, both with religious Pompeii and with archaeological Pompeii, which started in 1971 when he crashed the concert of Pink Floyd, and continued in 2005 with his concert held at the Grand Theatre, entitled “Non mi basti mai!”. “In the course of which – said Beatrice – Dalla performed some rearranged classical pieces of Mozart and Vivaldi, in anticipation of more complex rearrangements of Puccini's Tosca, demonstrating his exceptional musical versatility.” Mayor Ferdinando Uliano warmly thanked Lauro for having offered to Pompeii with his work the opportunity to remember Dalla, the great artist, whose work had been the soundtrack of existence of many generations in Italy. In particular, Uliano stressed the provocative unconventionality of the “minstrel of God”, which only apparently was in contrast with his vision of a believer. His speech was followed by a real firework, the glittering words by lawyer Arturo Sorrentino, a long-time friend of the writer, who after having praised the narrative style and the earlier unpublished content of the work of Lauro, which he described as deep, intelligent and engaging, accessible to all and a smooth read (you can devour this book in one bite!), analysed a few particular aspects of Dalla's personality: the southern dimension, reaching out constantly in search of friendship to always honour and never betray (he demonstrated this also when Craxi was disgraced!), and the pursuit of matriarchal family, the lack of which he felt; the homosexual dimension, which he wanted to protect in modesty, intimacy and total confidentiality, defending the sanctity of his sexual identity. A true essey of musical culture and sociology was the speech of journalist Rocco Traisci, who described Dalla not only as a simple albeit great Italian singer, but as a real “master” for the younger generation, whose poems “should be printed, discussed and studied in schools”. “With the lyrics of his songs, sometimes in a visionary and prophetic way – said Traisci – Lucio narrated the reality of everyday life, things that were happening every day, as reflected in his famous songs, such as ‘Come è profondo il mare’ or ‘L’anno che verrà’, and many other songs, completely unknown to the public, which should be rediscovered. This is why the book of Lauro is strategic. A milestone in Dallian bibliography. Therefore, it is not a usual monograph. It opens the mind of the reader to unknown nuances, to the secret world, and involves them through the southern dimension of the artist, the international dimension of an intellectual and of a musician, not just of a simple pop singer, but of a revolutionary of rock music. Today's rock singers are all Dalla's children.” In the end, Traisci outlined the elective affinities between Lucio Dalla and Matteo Salvatore: both self-taught; both set in reality having passed from poverty to success; both revolutionary and nonconformists. While thanking the City Council, Lauro stressed, how the Pompeian stage of Dallian tour could not have been omitted for all the reasons mentioned by the administrators and brilliant speakers. He did not fail to point out, how his own bond with Pompeii was initiated not only by Dalla, but also by his parents’ deep devotion to Our Lady of Pompeii. “In a moment, I will tell you about Dalla – concluded the writer – with the images and music of my documentary directed with all my heart”. The Pompeian audience proved to appreciate the film and applauded the author with affection following the screening of the documentary “Lucio Dalla and Sorrento - Places of the Soul”.
